Cameras for EnsoMOSAIC

Practically any digital camera can be utilized in EnsoMOSAIC in-flight system. The requirements for the camera are:
  • electronic input for remote control
  • capacity to store the images

MosaicMill has never developed any cameras or sensors, instead our principle has been to trust that the professional photographic companies have the best solutions for the image capture. During the years we have recommended several cameras for EnsoMOSAIC e.g. from Nikon, Canon and Minolta. As the camera and sensor development is fast the camera options change often.

Currently for standard medium format (about 5000 x 3500 pixels) imaging we recommend Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III, which is described by Canon and reviewed at dpreview.

Other cameras suitable for the system are for example

  • Rollei AIC, a medium format photogrammetric survey camera.
  • Hasselblad cameras with a selection of sensors of different sizes.
  • Nikon D3x with physically bigger pixels than Canon.
  • Sony Alpha series, for example Alpha 900 or the new 850.

CIR-converted cameras

We offer a service to convert standard digital SLR cameras to capture CIR and RGB instead of the standard RGB only. The converted camera is provided with two lenses filtered to capture RGB or CIR, thus on one flight it is possible to capture either CIR or RGB but not both.

The converted cameras are reconfigured and calibrated to optimize the captured images and to provide metric output. For high quality images it is essential to run the images through DigiPreProcess software which optimizes the CIR output.
