EnsoMOSAIC for forestry planning

Forestry companies and governmental organizations apply EnsoMOSAIC imaging system for forestry planning, monitoring and wood procurement. For forest managers orthorectified image mosaics can be processed in visible colours (RGB) or with near infra red light (CIR). CIR mosaics enable easy broadleved - conifer species delineation.

With EnsoMOSAIC forestry organizations can carry out aerial surveys independently according to their own schedule and operative needs. Usually forestry organizations apply EnsoMOSAIC installed in traditional manned aircrafts, and process orthomosaics in 0.3 - 0.5 meters resolution. Typical project area is between 2000 and 500000 ha, which can be processed into basic planning material within hours or days after the survey flight.

At forest holding or compartment level (10 - 1000 ha) forestry organizations apply EnsoMOSAIC image processing tools for imagery collected by UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). Orthomosaics from UAV images are very detailed; their typical resolution is 5 - 10 cm, thus single trees and their species can be detected. UAV imagery can also be used for tree height measurement with EnsoMOSAIC 3D.

EnsoMOSAIC for wood yard inventories

EnsoMOSAIC tools can be applied for accurate, timely and safe wood chip and roundwood pile inventories. Forest industries require wood stock inventories regularly to guarantee uninterrupted wood flow and to optimize their wood stock level. The results fulfill also the accuracy requirements of company accounting.

The first step in wood yard inventory is to carry out imaging with a UAV. Typical flying altitude is 150 - 200 meters resulting about 5 cm ground resolution. The second step is to rectify images with EnsoMOSAIC and to create high density XYZ point cloud and a Digital Surface Model with EnsoMOSAIC 3D. The last step is to calculate the volume of the wood chip or round wood pile.

MosaicMill can help you to evaluate and select the best UAV hardware to guarantee compatibility with EnsoMOSAIC mapping software. As comparison to fixed (e.g. lidar equipment in wood yard) measurement methods, EnsoMOSAIC requires only minimal investment as the same UAV can be used in several locations.
